Criogenico Energy Storage per la refrigerazione e fonte di energia rinnovabile

The CryoHub project team held its third meeting in April, hosted by Air Liquide in Paris, where consortium members ran a series of technical meetings. The meetings included a tour of the Air Liquide site where heat exchangers for cryogens are designed and manufactured. The use of liquid cryogens, in this case liquid air, is a key element of the CryoHub technology.  CryoHub is a European project, co-funded under the Horizon 2020 programme, to develop an interactive hub integrating renewable energy in industrial food refrigeration for enhancing power grid sustainability, using liquid air.


At the project meetings, a team of over 20 representatives from research institutes, universities, manufacturers and professional organisations reviewed progress in areas including:

  • Mapping of renewable energy sources and refrigerated warehouses across Europe CryoHub April meeting
  • Planning for the CryoHub demonstrator trial site
  • Design and integration of heat exchangers and thermal stores for demonstrator
  • Market studies and interviews with refrigerated warehouse operators and owners
  • Involvement and future input of Advisory Board members
  • Planning future dissemination activity, such as talks at the International Institute of Refrigeration events later this year, and possible workshops at the IIR Cold Chain Conference in China in 2018 and the International Congress of Refrigeration in Canada in 2019

The project has recently published two Mapping Studies on its website with a further study due to be released shortly.   A summary of the mapping exercise is included in the April newsletter which is now available in English, French, Spanish and Italian. 


A seminar open to experts interested in finding out more about the CryoHub project and technologies is being planned for October 2017 to be hosted by IRSTEA, the French National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture in Paris. At the seminar, the various project partners will give introductions to the innovative technologies behind CryoHub will and outline the potential benefits that have been identified for large scale cryogenic energy storage using liquid air in refrigerated warehouses or food factories.
