CryoHub has recently published an assessment of policy and regulatory matters related to the deployment of energy storage technology at EU and national level. The report is the result of research and interviews with industry and policymakers. It also considers how this technology, if deployed at scale, could impact other energy and food industry stakeholder decisions with the possibility of reducing costs and emissions for the user and the wider system. It also evaluates the potential business cases.
Section 1 introduces an approach to assessing energy storage policies according to their general function with an analysis of energy policies and status of energy storage in six countries including Germany, the UK, the USA, Japan, South Korea and Australia. The approaches each country has taken, the deployment of energy storage and enabling policy intervention, have been reviewed. In section 8, the typology of energy storage policies and emerging trends has been examined. This section will help understand the approaches different countries have taken regarding energy and energy storage policy. A number of key trends and successful policy approaches have been identified as part of this work.
Section 9 of this report identifies key market and policy barriers, and opportunities for the development of new energy technologies based on interviews with stakeholders in the cold storage and energy sectors.
inally, section 10 draws a number of conclusions from both the policy analysis and stakeholder attitude to new energy storage technologies such as Cryogenic Energy Storage:
The majority of industry stakeholders are aware of the benefits of energy storage and enthusiastic about the new energy storage technologies. However, in order to materialize their
enthusiasm technology and policy related issues still need to be addressed.
